Request a Free Colorectal Screening Kit
The American Cancer Society estimates that up to 90 percent of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented by early detection. To promote this important screening, MidMichigan’s Pardee Cancer Center is offering free kits that help detect hidden blood in the stool, one of the early signs of polyps or colon cancer.
MidMichigan uses the ColoCare™ screening for fecal occult blood. This is an easy-to-use test that involves dropping a special paper into the toilet after a bowel movement.

Who Should Be Screened
This screening is not intended for individuals with known sources of blood in their stool, such as from bleeding ulcers, hemorrhoids, colitis or similar conditions. These individuals should consult a physician regarding other methods of colon cancer screening.
In addition, this test is not a substitute for a regular physical and rectal exam by your physician, but may indicate the need for one.
American Cancer Society Recommendations
For men and women, beginning at age 50:
- Yearly fecal occult blood test (FOBT is a test for hidden blood in the stool)
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
- Yearly fecal occult blood test plus flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years
- Double-contrast barium enema every 5 years
- Colonoscopy every 10 years
Individuals with certain risk factors should begin earlier and be screened more often. Talk with your doctor if you are at higher risk. |
